How can Shading Effect a drawing ?

Light and shadows visually define objects.

You know the objects around you are three dimensional cause you can walk up them, see them from all sides, and touch them.

Addictive Color System?

A color mixing system in which combinations of different wavelengths of light create visual sensations of color.

What is Hue ? 

A property of color defined by distinctions within the visual spectrum or color wheel. 

Red, blue, yellow, green are examples of hue .

What is the value of color ?

Color value refers to the lightness or darkness of the hue. Adding white to a hue produces a high-value color, often called a tint. Adding black to a hue produces a low-value color, often called a shade.

Intensity of Color

Also called chroma or saturation, is the brightness of a color. A color is at full intensity when not mixed with black or white - a pure hue. You can change the intensity of a color, making it duller or more neutral by adding grey to the color. You can also change the intensity by adding its complement (this is the color found directly opposite on the traditional color wheel). When changing colors this way, the color produced is called a tone.

What are Warm & Cool Colors?

What is Color Dominance ?

Color Dominance is the principle of a composition that causes the viewer to be initially attracted to the emphasized color.  Every colored art composition portrays color dominance in some way. There are several different ways that a color can be dominant:

              -A color is used in the most prominent area of a composition, 

              -A color is next to other colors which causes the most contrast,

              -A color is the most vibrant, OR    

              -A color occupies the most area in a compositon. 

Like regular dominance , Color Dominance can have a dominant, subordinate , and accentual colors .

What are Complementry Colors ?

Complementary colors: A color scheme incorporating Opposite Hues on the color wheel. These colors Accentuate each other in Juxtaposition and neutralized each other in Nature.

What are Triadic Colors?

Chapter 12: Value

Photoshop has a simple way to show Value.

What is The definition of Value?
A measure of relativer lightness or darkness.

When you think about the Value of Contrast -
It is the Contrast between our lightest and darkest values.  (According to Albert Munsell who developed much of the visual color theory we use today), the dark to light scale - he numbered the colors 1-10 , 1 being black and 10 being white.

Value Patterns 
Good compositions are generally an arrangement of three or four shapes.  Incorporate the principle of dominance. In order for a picture to have a design it must have value differences or simply light and dark masses that produce a "Value Pattern". Using only 3 values, the following basic value patterns are among the possibilities.

A dark Shape against mid-tones.
A light shape against mid-tones.
A large dark and a small light against mid-tones.
A large light and a small dark against mid-tones.
A graded value pattern.
A checkerboard pattern.

Value as Emphasis?
Some situations call for strong visual dominance such as attracting the viewer's attention to the main subject of an image. Some situations call for more subtle emphasis such as leading the viewer through the composition and directing them to a secondary focal point. The designer should be able to use all levels of control over the viewer's attention. This includes the ability to put something in an image that may escape detection for a long time (and then be a delight to find).

There are three major methods for controlling emphasis in a visual image: contrast, placement and isolation.


Chiaroscuro?
an Italian word that means 'light-dark'.  In Paintings the description refers to clear tonal Contrasts which are often used to suggest the volume and modeling of the subjects depicted.

Leonardo was fasinated by the atmosphere and by its effects on the colors and distinctness of distant objects.Though some begun to crete some of these effects in their work , leonardo was the first to make 

these measurments. He called the subject Arial Perspective

Thus if one is to be five times as distant, 

Make it five times blurr.

Chapter 7: Line

When you Begin with Photoshop start with an easy line.

Implied Lines are a series of lines or points that are connected automatically every time you see them.

Psychic line is a line made by a mental connection, not an actual line but we feel the line. You can use a psychic line to draw attention to an object without using an actual line

Contour and Gesture Are two types of drawing .

What is the difference between contour and Gesture Lines?

Contour Lines: used to find edges.  Also to create boundaries around or inside an object .

Gesture Lines: Are quick and rough continuous lines (form of movement)

Chapter 8: Shape

Now make a shape using the tools create a basic shape to show positive & Negative Space.

Shape is an area created by enclosed lines or use of color and value to give form .

We use the term figure to describe an object in the foreground, we use ground to describe space between figures.

Biomorphic Shapes : Biomorphic shapes are shapes inspired by nature.

Non Objects : Non objects are shapes that are unfamiliar to us, not of our world so to say.

Chapter 9 : Pattern and texture

Now with Photoshop try to illustrate Pattern and texture.

Texture is the surface quality of objects that appeals to the tactile senses.

Pattern is a design we can see on objects in paintings and drawings.  A pattern is also made up of lines and curves arranged in fashion; It is constantly nonexistant. A Pattern can also be so consistant as the blind vision with its informity.

Visual Textures are images of a object with Texture.

                                 Tactile Texture -is the use of material create a surface that can be felt . This can be used to create a 3 dimensional surface .

Chapter 10 : Illusion of Space 

Here im showing illusion of space using a simple positive and negative space picture.

How do we explain 3D to 2D shapes:

A 2D shape is a flat object . For Example a square, circle ect.

3D shape is a shape in space. For Example a cube, sphere, ect.

Picture Plane is the surface in which the design is placed.

Foreshortening- is the distortion of shape due to perspective where objects appear shorter that we know them to be .

You can also use Size Relationships to achieve space. For example when you look at the Painting you know the larger boat is closer than the lil boats in the distance.

Vertical Location- is when objects that get higher on the picture plane appear to move further away.

Aerial Perspective -is the use of value or color to show depth.

Multi Point perspective- is when different objects in a design have different vanishing points.

Amplified Perspective- is when an object is pointed directly at the viewer. used in foreshadowing.

Isometric Projection shows 3d shapes without sense of depth. 

Chapter 11: Motion

Now use Photoshop Showing Motion . Usually you draw simple lines

Stillness and Arrested Motion are two areas that help create the illusion. Similar but they are different in a way of stillness being much more natural. Arrested motion is more human.  we cant stand like statues so we have to adjust and this signifies the pause of motion.
